  Abstract:  Prezenta lucrare a istoricului Robert Muchembled încearcă să facă o sinteză a prezenţei şi incursiunii diavolului în istoria spaţiului european din secolele XII – XX. Pre¬zenţa necuratului în societatea europenă, atît de bine evidenţiată de cuvintele lui Caillois care spunea: Alungaţi infernul şi el va reveni în galop, subliniază foarte bine starea de spirit a societăţii medievale euro¬pene în legătură cu prezenţa diavolului, stare la care, în opinia autorului, a aderat până şi Biserica Catolică.
